Like whoa~!

January 31, 2008 at 11:57 pm (N.E.R., banned, censored, quotes, riot, senior, speech)

Okay, so there was a sit in at my school recently over the whole “Freedom of Speech” issue… it made the news. But they totally butchered the facts making it seem like the kids were out of hand! It was over a speech that was APPROVED but then LATER denied… it was ridiculous! But it was so funny, our school ALWAYS complains about lack of school spirit… but we had it today… or spirit for our rights… I read the full uncensored version of the piece. Here are some quotes I particularly liked… It reminds be alot of Buddhism… or Zen … or something like that… pardon my ignorance… I’m pretty sure it’s Buddhism though. Since the Prince (who was given everything he ever wanted) left his castle and gave up everything he owned to reach nirvana… and it’s kinda what it says in the piece

Quotes from a Speech that was censored at my school (it was written by a student)

“forget. But do not regret. And do not hope. You are not your past; you are not your future; you are not the things you have; you are not the things you don’t have. Everything you feel, everything you think, is a distorted reflection of everything you are. Nothing is pure. In having nothing, you can be pure.”

“You cannot know something, truly know something, until you have known its opposite. Everything is relative. How can you say you’re happy if you’ve never felt pain? How would you even know what happiness is? The only way to be free to lose all freedom.”

“if we perceive nothing, what does the world matter to us? If we do not see it, smell it, feel it, taste it, hear it, think it, how do we know it exists? Why do we care? it is because we know that eventually, we will open our eyes.”

This is the conclusion paragraph of the essay… wow is it amazing…
“Just think, if you fall asleep right now, you will not wake up — a different you will open his eyes and he will see a different world. The you that fell asleep, the world that you last saw — these things will no longer exist. They will have been consumed by the past, absorbed by the way things can never be again. The past is gone.
So deal with it. Stop trying to hold on. Stop trying to control things. Stop your stupid pursuit of righteous self importance. Stop worrying, stop caring, stop searching for meaning, because there is none. Stop asking right or wrong, stop fucking living for others, stop your mind, stop your soul, stop everything that isn’t the thing you are — just be. Exist as you are. Don’t. live caged by influence but don’t revel in stagnation, either. Just lie back and be. Just live life detached and die free.”

It was an AMAZING speech, I loved it! I like the message as unattainable as it is…

WTF?!

January 31, 2008 at 2:24 am (american, celebrities, cosmetic, media, personality, surgery, wtf?!)

Why the hell would a parent allow their kid to has cosmetic surgery?! And I’m NOT talking about someone who got disfigured in an injury… I’m talking about, a pretty girl that doesn’t like her nose or something stupid like that and under-goes surgery to look better… honestly! Media has changed people, personally I LOVE media, and I LOVE Celebrities (not fond of American ones though, I like Japanese ones better). But people have really put an emphasis on being pretty… whatever happened to personality?! It’s like that doesn’t matter anymore! I know in my school ANYONE can get a date if they have confidence, it doesn’t matter how nasty, arrogant, rude, (sometimes even ugly) they are… as long as they have confidence. Unless you’re popular, then you need to have confidence and be flawless… incredibly flawless… usually they wear an insane amount of makeup… and you can usually tell. Though once in a while one of them will blend it in and make it look more natural. Anyway, this is just a rant. And no “you’re just mad because you’re single” I’m not single, I was lucky. At least Valentine’s day isn’t too commercialized (at least not at my age) so that people don’t feel too bad at Valentine’s Day. I have no idea what to do for it…eh… I’ll think of something… eventually… hopefully… I have no idea… whatever though

Science without Morals?

January 30, 2008 at 2:24 am (morals, opinion, science, without)

It seems that science would greatly improve without morals. Not necessarily for humanity’s delight though… there would probably be more biological weapons and stuff… I only bring this up because I was reading an article in Scientific America about how scientists probably could create a machine that read someone’s mind but it interferes with personal privacy, which has to do with morals pretty much. So if you take that away you could easily create a machine like that ,and if you can create a machine like that then you cold probably create anything. Also the whole “Stem cell Research” controversy… it seems like the closer we get to creating something astonishing… well… the more controversial it gets… oh well… just my thought…

By the way, I’m not saying it shouldn’t have morals, I’m just stating that without them research would be faster and more things probably would’ve been created (probably at everything’s expense though :P )

Post I - Intelligence… Genes or Environment??? o.O???

January 29, 2008 at 10:46 pm (environment, genes, intelligence, language, math)

So… I’ve been wondering…. how much of intelligence is genes and how much is environment… or does it effect how one absorbs information…

I know this family and they have four children, ALL of them are mathematical geniuses. That said, they’re not necessarily the best students, just in math and English (reading anysways) (well, minus one of them, but he’s the only boy) So I thought, ‘maybe it’s genes’

But then I look at my sister and I, and may it’s because we were exposed to foreign language really early on in life (so it would be environment) , we’re geniuses when it comes to foreign language. My father was fluent in French and English, so he’d speak a little French to us here and there when we were little, not a lot though. (BTW my sister and I aren’t related, she’s from Korea and I’m from Chile.) My sister grasped the French language easily when she entered Middle School (because that’s where they start the language program at my school) she went into Honors French in High School (they didn’t have honors in middle school). Of course, she’s full Korean, there’s no chance of her genes holding the ability to speak French. You could refer back to the “the younger you are the easier it is to learn a language” but then… I couldn’t grasp French very well. I struggled with it. After getting to French III I just dropped it completely, however learning Spanish was easy to me, like, really easy. I actually started Spanish I this school year, and I’m sure you’re thinking, Spanish I… of COURSE it’s going to be easy… I mean, it’s Spanish I for crying out loud. But then again… I learned the first four chapters completely in 1 week… (while my class was still working on “Hola!” and remembering what it means…dear god… >.< | and it took half a year for our class to go over the first 4 chapters) Also, on top of that I was learning other things. My Spanish teacher actually said, “God this must be boring for you…” and he’s recommending me for Spanish III next year instead of Spanish II. But maybe Spanish was in my blood, even though I wasn’t exposed to it like how my sister was exposed to French. So it’s like Genes worked with me and environment worked with my sister… of course, my sister was really good at math (a stereotypical thing of asian kids).

So I’m still wondering if it’s genes or environment… but maybe it’s a little bit of both and depending on the kid environment may or may not have more of an effect than genes… like how some people are more easily influenced than others… my sister does go with trends and I don’t…any way that’s all for now…
